Nails I Love - Glitter Gal DARK PURPLE

Nails I Love

GLITTER GAL – Dark Purple
 .
Aka Glitter and holo and purple – Oh My!

Hello Goddesses!  Well, they blogged, I gasped, I purchased.  And for the last 2 days I have been proudly staring at the first of my Glitter Gals, Dark Purple.

You may remember me posting a photo of the entire sisterhood which arrived on Tuesday – officially the most exciting nail mail ever.

Christina at Let Them Have Polish – I showed my 8 yr old daughter Beth the first video of Muffin choosing your polish and she promptly had a re-enactment and chose this beauty as the first one to try J  (and I’ll be trying at least 1 a week til they’re all done.)

So, dark purple.  Actually, not as dark as I was expecting (I thought it would be closer to Color Club’s Wild At Heart) but .. oh my.  She’s so preeeeeetty.  This is simply dazzling.

More dark fuschia than purple, this is a magenta violet lovefest with galaxies of light and pixie dust.  The 3D effect is quite amazing – the colour looks very deep – and the holo is quite spectacular.

This is one of those nail varnishes that makes you feel beautiful and blessed just by being able to wear it.  It drew oooohs and aaaahs from all my friends, and I was often spotted staring at it, hypnotised, ridiculously gaga!  The intensity of this is utterly mesmerising.

Lol, this is one of the really pretty babies, such a keeper.  The colour is pristine, sharp and rich and the holo is just to die for, and as you'd expect, different lighting brings out different facets of the colour and the holo.

The bottle IS extremely dinky.  Apparently they’re 9ml, but they feel really really teeny.

This is a perfect party polish, or a perfect “dammit, I’m going to feel happy today” polish.  And for once, I’m going to let the Goddess do the rest of the talking …..  enjoy J

Oh, PS, I bought these from Leah Ann Rowe's eBay shop xx

Nails I Love - Sally Hansen MYSTIC LILAC

Nails I Love

SALLY HANSEN – Mystic Lilac

Oh my god.  I am in so in love with this polish it just crashed into my All Time Top 10 List.  I love this.  LOTS.

My holy grail of nail varnishes is always to find the perfect lilacg-grey-taupe and oh my god does Mystic Lilac deliver.  Stop the clocks, the search is over J  Mystic Lilac is amaaaaaazing.  Its beyond gorgeous, it transmogrifies (real world) in the light and I haven’t stopped staring at it for the 2 days I’ve worn it.

Mystic Lilac is a greige base with some lilac / lavender applied.  There is no bright whiteness here – just a whole lotta sludge going on.  This is a dirty girl’s lilac.   A swampy lilac.  A concrete lilac.  A lilac porridge.

It’s dusty and murky in tone with just that beautiful lilac hue and then …. It has green glass flecks.  Teeny tiny itsy bitsy flecks that catch the light and turn it into an elfin masterpiece.   This is the colour the rebellious tweenage elves would wear in ElfLand to match their dirty blonde hair and their grass-stained knees.

little green flecks!

Really, I could go on all night.  I love this colour sooooooo much.   However, 7, yes s-e-v-e-n, Glitter Gal holo polishes just arrived and siiiiiiigh I just have to go and spend some time with them J

Happy polishing xx

Depression - Me and My Shadow 1

So What Is Depression?

Almost overnight, depression seems to have become the disease of the 21st Century.  A virus of the mind, it overtakes the strongest, yet has also been appropriated by the duvet generation to justify their lethargic malaise.

So what is living with depression really like ?  For me, with 1 notable exception, depression has always been linked with hormonal imbalances – puberty, an endocrinal illness, post-natal depression and then the exception: divorce.  It first landed on me in my teens, then my twenties, then my thirties, and now, as I step into my forties, I am trying to tip toe away from it, yet keep yo-yoing back like someone trying to escape a bungee cord.

Depression for me is like a wet, miserable Thursday in November.  It feels dark, heavy, gloomy – there is no light.  For someone defined by their sparkle, this is the hardest fact of all.  JK Rowling had it so right when she created the Dementors, for depression truly does drain you of the vibrancy of emotion, and reduce you to pure, banal, survival mode.

For me, I can feel it coming.  It creeps up in the shadows, toying with me.  I’ll have the odd day here and there where I have that gloomy feeling, but I can shake it off and convince myself I’m ok.  And so, she dances round me for a few days, like a butterfly clinging to the shadows.

A while later, I’ll realise I’ve felt a bit funky for a couple of days in a row now, but nothing to worry about, I’ll be fine tomorrow.  Often, you don’t realise depression has snared you until you’re in the net, sinking under and not at all inclined to struggle for air.

Sylvia Plath likened her depression to a bell jar, a life of stale air at one remove, where nothing could touch you or be touched, and where life was lived by remote.  For me, this captures some of it, as does Stephen King’s short story The Langoliers, where life again is stale, drained of intensity and faded at the corners.

For me, it’s like living under a heavy see-through dark cloak.  I can see the real world around me, hear it, smell it, touch it, taste it, but it can’t reach me.  Everything is an effort, even thought itself, and nothingness is a frighteningly accessible state of mind.  It’s a bit like living in a cocoon, or having padding around you – nothing, NOTHING, can reach you.

I often think this is why I also tend to extremes.  The only way I can hear is to be loud.  The only way to feel joy is to laugh excessively.  It’s only by going over the top that you can begin to experience emotion, sensation and colour in a remotely real way.  This is why 1 nail varnish can’t bring joy but 20 at a time can.  It’s the reason why a handbag has to be insanely expensive to even register on the radar.  It’s the reason why we hoard and over-purchase – only too much can attempt to convince us we are anywhere near enough.

It’s the same with food.  In a life that feels bland, empty and distant, only something gargantuan in size, taste or calories can touch the sides and activate the senses.

It’s life under water, in a bubble, slightly suffocated, but not so fussed you want to do anything about it.  You trundle on, a bit like a hamster on a wheel, foolishly assuming that one day that wheel will fall of its axle and land you in a better place.  Of course, it never does.

It’s hard to do anything about depression, because its greatest strength is its ability to paralyse, to place the person in an emotional coma where impetus and energy are conditions of the past.  Life isn’t lived; we exist.  You find yourself in an airspace of one, remote and alone, and where the comfort of the duvet is as close as you come to peace.

You want to live again, you really do, but the mere thought of it is exhausting.  You begrudge the things you have to do to exist.  Just getting up feels like a chore.   A To-Do List becomes your worst nightmare, because why do when you just don’t care?  Personal hygiene doesn’t register too highly either.  The effort of shaving your legs can be avoided with trousers, and if you’re all alone on the weekend, who’s going to notice if you haven’t brushed your teeth or you stay in your PJs?

You look at people genuinely living their lives with bemusement and exhaustion, partly envious, partly bitter.  You have no comprehension how life can be attacked in such a way as you lie there, slowly being poisoned by the depression that has stalked you for so long.

You don’t want to feel this way; you just do.  Depression kills, but in a slow, dull way.  Madness and mania attract the headlines and the flamboyant reckless acts of daring and death; depression just …. well, carries on.  Depression is the opposite of living, the opposite of loving, and the opposite of community – there is only room for one when you are depressed.

Eventually, when you realise nothing can capture your attention, imagination or delight, you find yourself at the doctors.  You know you need help, and they know it too.  The difficulty is that help takes at least 2 weeks to get into your system, and this makes time stretch very slowly indeed.  But sometimes, you know, the drugs DO work, and peace can be restored, and balance can be regained.

And sometimes, well sometimes you just have to accept that depression will be your shadow for life.

Nails I Love - Sally Hansen DELPHINIUM

Nails I Love

SALLY HANSEN – Delphinium

Helloooooo.  This is actually my first Sally Hansen post and the first time I have worn her.   Being a bit of a snob, I’ve always looked down on cheaper brands, and in the UK we only see her really cheap stuff rather than this, from the Complete Salon Manicure line.

Firstly, even before we get to the polish, can we just take a moment to applaud the bottle.  This feels like splendour.  Solid, chunky, round AND square, with a lovely silver wand, this just looks plush.  And talking of plush, the brush is ah-may-zing! The widest brush I have ever seen, you can load this up and do half a hand easily.  Big fan.  Big likey.  I also love that all Sally Hansen’s have the name label on top of the wand, so that when you’re peering down at your collection, you can easily find the one you want – genius, and so obvious!

And so the colour.   Delphinium is a lighter than air lilac, a low-cal confection of warmed hot air.  Super soft, super light and super subtle, this also has a beautiful purity.  It’s lilac with just a hint of grey to take the brightness away, and fits beautifully between OPI’s Planks A Lot and Essie’s Nice is Nice.  Goldilocks would love this – it’s not too dark, and not too pale; it’s Just Right.

In the bottle, it looks like ice cream – all smooth tranquillity and elegance.

I’m really happy with how this looks on my shorter nails.  I also think it’s a great office colour – understated but wowing at the same time.

The accent nail is another Sally – Mystic Lilac (she’ll be stealing her own show later in the week) and I used SH Twinkle, Twinkle on the thumb and middle finger.

TT by the way is one of the prettiest glitters I own – a beautiful swirl of silver and blue glitter of medium and micro sizes.

Hope you like this one!  J

Nail Fun - Carrie

Nail Fun

Nail Fun is all about having fun with your nails.  Layering it, splattering it, making pretty patterns with it … it’s the most fun you can have on your own with a child in the house !!  J

CARRIE !!!!

So, the theme for this week’s PAA Monday mani was film / tv / book inspired and I’ll admit, I struggled, having foolishly done a vampire mani a few weeks before.  I decided if I couldn’t think of anything, I would do Freddy Kreuger’s jumper (and therefore my first tape mani in black and red) and then a strange thing happened – everywhere in the blogosphere this week, I saw drip manis and so – Carrie, ta-dah!

Carrie, the Stephen King book, the Sissy Spacek film, sees our strange heroine bucketed in pig’s blood at the prom.  Any mani that allows me to make blood splatters is a winner, so off I went!  I struggled with thinking what base colour to use.  I initially was going to use a red base (to add to the drama of the blood and give it some depth) but I couldn’t get the combination of reds right.  Eventually, I settled on a contrast colour – Color Club’s WORTH THE RISQUE – which also felt quite prom-like.

Drip mani is easier than it looks.  You paint the tips of your nails, then you take your dotting tool (medium size) and dot the drips.  I then did a few random dots as well.

On the middle nail, I tried to create a pool of blood, but it didn’t quite work – oops.

I did love how this turned out – I’ll be returning to the drip theme again methinks.

Have fun Goddesses J

COLOR CLUB – Worth The Risque

Hey gang of goddesses.  I have to confess, I’m a little bit in love with Color Club  right now.  I hadn’t heard of them in the UK, and then through various blogs came across them.  I’ve bought quite a *ahem* few, and I LOVE!  The bottle is chunky, they apply easily, they do the best ever range of purples AND they do holos.  And this, my lovelies, is the holo-tastic Worth The Risque.

(sorry, only 1 coat because I have other things I need to do with for my PAA Monday mani)

This really isn’t my sort of colour.  It’s light, it’s bright, and I of course am a dark, vampy child.  However this is HOLO and it would be rude to only buy the dark ones.  Right ?

Worth The Risque is a lovely light meringue of silver-grey and pixie dust.  It’s a super light confection of a colour and just so damn pretty!  This is what all the fairies would be wearing in FairyLand if we were lucky enough to spend a day there J

It has beautiful holo going on AT A REASONABLE PRICE.  Really, there’s nothing not to love about this.

Goddess bless Color Club!  J

Nails I Love - Zoya JACY & Deborah Lippmann HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Nails I Love

ZOYA – Jacy & DEBORAH LIPPMANN Happy Birthday

Hey girlies J

Sooooo it was my birthday this week and I decided that was enough of a half-excuse to buy DL’s lustful Happy Birthday.  And then someone also bought me it as a present – yay – so I can now make official Candy Shop and Forget You dupes J

I thought long and hard about what to wear her over, and after seeing a lot of pink in the blogosphere this last week, decided to go for the only Zoya Pulse Goddess I didn’t swatch last week – Jacy.

You can just about see the glass flecks if you can see past the "colouring outside the lines" lol - I hadn't cleaned up yet!

Jacy is a powerhouse.  She is ridicloulously complex and deep, and the photos really are lame in comparison to how she looks in person.  A deep raspberry magenta with flashes of blue and fuchsia shimmer, Jacy *also* rocks the glass flecks.  Teeny tiny ones.  Teeny tiny bright pink ones.  Sooooo pretty.  So flipping hard to photograph.  The only photo that comes close is one under bright light – the flecks were almost impossible to see in natural light, but I felt so smug knowing they were there J

I then layered the Happy Birthday on and – holy moly!  I was not prepared for quite how much glitterness was going to come out of that bottle!  We’re all so used to stroking a glitter on and having it sparse itself out across the nail, but this baby, I don’t know if it was breeding in the brush but it just kept on coming lol.   (Which is good.  We moan about the price of DL but I reckon this baby would last double due to the sheer abundance of glitter in there, making her a more reasonable price per use.)

A bit too much in my opinion.  I felt they were over blingy, and I will definitely use less next time.

And then I did something ….. amazing!  I crackled them.  Oh my sweet polishy goodness.  Suddenly, Happy Birthday looks like a firework, her colourful brightness peaking through the night sky.  Amazing!  So so happy with this look.

Look, I still can’t stop looking at it.

And more.  And more lol.

I get sooooooo excited, far more than other bloggers!  Good or bad, I'm not sure ha ha.

Have fun J
