Friday Friends - Missy from Gnarly Gnails

Hi Goddesses

Today's Friday Friend IS a great friend, and someone who I have a lot of affection for.  She's a little bit kooky, comes up with outrageous manis, is hilarious AND has a great sense of style.  She's also an awesome photographer.

I think Missy and I became friends just from commenting on each other's blogs, and once she knew I hated teal (her favourite) colour, I was fresh meat for every insult in the book :)   Her blog is awesome, so please check it out, and she also does an excellent Saturday round-up.  Sooooo, heeeeeeeeeere's Missy :)

What is your name and what is your blog
My name is Missy, I hail from the great state of Georgia at present time. I run the blog Gnarly Gnails, which can be found at the following social locations on the webber:

What can we expect to see on your blog / How would you describe your style / your blog’s style
You can expect to see see a lot of nail art that falls into current trends. The stranger/more out there the better is what I always say. I like to try new things, its hard to create something no one has ever seen before when it’s all been done more or less, so I at least try to put a new spin on things. I would describe my own style as rock n roll nails without the stilletto’s! My blogs style is bright and colorful, just like me.

Why did you decide to start the blog –
I got into nails in January of 2012 and only a few weeks later I had become SO obsessed with nails, reading blogs, reading the MUA nail board that my friend who runs a makeup blog asked me if I was planning on starting my own blog. Right then and there I decided I would! I couldnt let all of this creativity and excitement I had for nail polish be stuck here with no one to hear about it but my boyfriend!

How many followers do you have / how many visitors do you get a day / if you have an established blog, how have you “built” your following
I am currently at a little over 600 followers on my blog (that I can count via GFC). I average about 200 page views a day and have been running for 4 months.

What do you do in the real world, and how do you fit blogging in with your lifestyle ?
At present time I work part time at a friends boutique. I also run my own business from home making jewelry and hand sewn items such as handbags and aprons. Blogging fits in quite easily right now for me because I spent alot of time at home and alot of time on the internet!

What is the favourite post you have done
I’d say it is probably a guest post I did for this very blog a couple of months ago for one of our Purple Crumpet Fairy Challenges. I liked it because I really dug the way the color combo worked together, it was the first time I did a tutorial and I thought I really pushed myself to do something I hadn’t seen before (sponging over tape/stencils).

What is your most popular ever post
My 1st blog giveaway was my biggest post. Its no longer up as it has ended. My 2nd biggest blog post ever is a review and swatch post for the Sinful Colors Castaway Collection. I guess at the time there weren’t many people mentioning it.
Which blogger do you most admire / who do you follow / who are your go to bloggers
I follow hundreds of blogs. So many that I have about 500 posts a day to read. Its a lot of work keeping up with the Jones’s! Bloggers I most admire are ones that really push the boundaries of trying new art and styles. Also bloggers with a good layout and great photos are always high on my list of blogs to read. Chalkboard Nails, Rebecca likes Nails, Nailasaurus, Very Emily, Nailside, The Daily Nail, The Crumpet, PSHIIIT, NailXChange, Nail Polish Wars & Robin Moses...those are just a few I HAVE to read every day!

When blog posts go wrong – pls share a photo and link of a blog post of your own that you are ashamed of / wish you could redo / didn’t turn out how you wanted it to.
Oh geez, more than not this is the case. As a new blogger there are very few times I am exceptionally thrilled with how something comes out. But I think part of being a blogger is letting people see it all, good and bad. I’ve also learned that things I don’t personally like sometimes end up to be things others simply love. Here’s probably my least favorite post ever:
A funky french I tried in matte/glossy. Polish was super thick and this was my 3rd blog post ever. I had so much to learn, this post makes me cringe when I see it.
Pick a further 3 manis of your choice from your blog
a - This one, All on Black, is one I loved because of the use of matte v. glossy and the fact that it’s houndstooth, which is  my favorite patten next to leopard print!
b - Next up is a post I did for the Monkey See Monkey Do Challenge, so while it wasn’t my own creation, I did love the way the color choices I made for it turned out!
c - And lastly, I really loved the way THIS mani turned out in terms of layering and stamping all coming together into a nexus of total awesome. There are a lot of different techniques I used in this mani, so I’m really proud that it didn’t end up looking overdone!
Finally your stash – talk about your favourite brands, colours, must have tools, your “number” etc
It makes me happy to think about my “stash”. My dirty secret only a few people know about in my real life. I currently own about 475 polishes. My favorite brands are Color Club, Kleancolor, China Glaze, Sinful Colors, Catrice, Whimsical Ideas by Pam, Deborah Lippmann and Nubar. My favorite colors are always the Teal ones, the glittery ones, the holographic ones.
As for tools...I couldn’t live without a good buffing block or my Konad black and white stamping polishes!

Oh and one last thing – what tip would you share with someone who is thinking about starting a blog ?
It takes time and it takes devotion to get people interested in your blog. And good photography skills. Don’t rush any of it.

Let’s Get Personal
What’s your earliest polish memory
My grandmother is an “Avon Lady” and has been for as long as I can remember in my life, I remember so many times I spent weekends with her going on her “calls” dropping off orders, filling orders...we’d always go through her box of samples and she’d let me pick out nail polishes and lipsticks I wanted. It was absolutely the beginning of what would later mold me into a makeup artist and future polish-aholic!

Fave film
So hard to pick just one! I’m such a tv and movie junkie. But honestly, a movie that was so cutting edge at the time and one of my favorite books was Fight Club. It was also the first time I realized that Brad Pitt was actually as hot as everyone said he was for so many years.

Fave type of music
It’s all over the place with me. I like almost everything but I love Punk and I love old school 80s new wave music!

How old are you
38!

Are you a cat or dog person
In my heart I’m a dog person. I grew up with dogs my whole childhood and even as an adult I only ever had dogs. But last year we rescued a kitten from a tree and now I’m a converted cat person!
Fave book
Fight Club. And American Psycho.

If you won £5million on the lottery, what would you do
Pay off any debt I had, buy a house, a nice car, give my son money for college and a car and then go on an epic trip to Europe for shopping and sightseeing!

What inspires you
I can’t pinpoint it. My tastes tend to be all over the map most of the time, sometimes inspiration is everywhere I am, sometimes it needs to slap me in the face!
